Our engine editor and resident land expert, Bryon Dorr, scoured Overland Expo West 2022 in Flagstaff, Arizona to find some of the coolest adventure rigs out there.
I’ve been to every Overland Expo West since 2012 – and the majority of other overland expos and rallies across North America over the past few decades. Needless to say, I’ve seen just about every type of land adventure vehicle. It takes a lot for a vehicle to grab my attention these days, but really cool vehicles always excite me so much.
This year’s Overland Expo West was a bit odd, as it had only been 6 months since the the last event happened – due to the postponement of the pandemic. This meant there was slightly less attendance than the September event, and many of the same vehicles and equipment were on display.
I like to bring you new and interesting, so here are 15 vehicles that caught my eye during the 2022 event. Some new, some old, but all shown at Overland Expo for the first time – however let us know.
Overland Expo West 2022: 15 vehicles that are turning heads
Concept Jeep Farout
I’m a fan of this build because I was able to take it on an overland adventure along the Grand Canyon’s North Rim before the show.
In the end, it was my home and my means of transportation for over a week. The Concept Jeep Farout is a 37 diesel Gladiator with a custom AT Overland Habitat motorhome in the back. It also features a ton of custom touches, like paint, orange spray liner, teak RV construction, and custom tartan orange seat inserts.
Much more on this build and my adventures in it soon.
XOverland Tundra ‘Orion’
Grab a brand new Toyota Tundra TRD Pro and let the XOverland crew, with their many years of experience and premium build partner parts, and you get “Orion”. This 2022 Tundra is specifically designed as a post production video vehicle for field editing.
As such, it features an Alucab Canopy Camper with a custom Goose Gear interior. It rolls on 35s, and it has a new CBI front bumper, lots of Equipt Expedition Outfitters racks, canopies, boxes, and more. It even has a Webasto radiator.
This heater will be put to good use very soon as the XOvelrand team embarks on its final overland adventure for the Nordic series.
Ten weeks of adventure should lead to 10 new video episodes, starting with aid work in Poland. Orion was completed just before Overland Expo and will be on a ship very soon, heading to Europe.
Overland Expo Ultimate Overland Build
This is Overland Expo’s idea of the “Ultimate Overland Vehicle 2022”. It’s built on the just released 2022 GMC Sierra AT4X and was built by Mule Expedition Outfitters. Overall, it features pieces from over 21 different Overland Expo exhibitors.
This vehicle will travel with the media throughout the year as it travels to all four Overland Expo shows. At the end of the year, it will be auctioned on Bring a Trailer, with 100% of the proceeds going to the Charity Overland Expo Foundation.
Red-tailed ground sprinter
Redtail Overland is still hard at work refining its carbon hard-sided rooftop camper tent system. This latest (and super top-of-the-line) prototype is about to be ready for full production and has been displayed atop a fully built motorhome.
There is a ladder and a passage in the van to the Redtail RV, which is basically a second bedroom in this app. High van life for sure.
TAV Stage 3 Tacoma with Bed Replacement RV System
TAV builds capable, fast off-road machines, with an emphasis on Toyota platforms. His latest build is this beast of a Tacoma that has all the tires, suspension, lights and accessories you could want. What really sets it apart from the crowd, however, is the replacement for the Bowen Customs bed for open-top motorhomes.
On this first proof-of-concept build, the motorhome is an AT Overland Habitat motorhome. The TAV Spec Bowen Customs Bed System has built-in rear stairs and tons of lockable storage – and it even offers seating inside the campervan. However, cool quality equipment doesn’t come cheap, as simply replacing the bed will set you back over $17,000.
Maverick Custom GFC Motorhome
Take a new Ford Maverick, add a 2 inch lift, rear airbags, quality AT tires and a custom built motorhome (by Justin at Tubeworks) with a GFC tent on top, and you have a little adventure. quite impressive land. It is @erranceleweekendis built.
The entire slide-out motorhome system is said to weigh only 700 pounds.
Nimbl Evolution F-550
The Agile evolution is an updated version of the XPCamper V1 composite motorhome. The latest iteration of this motorhome – with 62 units on the road to date – has a larger driver’s side window, new drop-down safety locks for the pop-up mechanism, uses a hydraulic lift mechanism compared to the electricity, and has a ton of other little upgradeable improvements.
Nimbl makes about 12 campers a year now. The motorhome weighs around 2,800 pounds and ranges from $267,000 to $427,000, depending on options. A new option – $20,000 – is a full carbon layer. This makes the motorhome stronger and stiffer, but not lighter.
The Overland Expo show truck is also the first version of this motorhome to be installed on a truck larger than one ton. It looks good on an F-550 and 42 inch tires!
Goose Gear Series 60 Land Cruiser
Brian Fulton is the owner of Goose Gear and continues to have some truly inspiring personal ground vehicles, in which he drives great miles on great adventures.
One of his latest builds is this LS-powered 60-series Land Cruiser on 80-series suspension and complete axles. It also has a Goose Gear platform systemAlu-Cab RTT, Scheel-Mann seats and much more.
TourRig F550 motorhome
Best known for its custom aluminum van builds and interior components, TourRig will now grow and apply its expertise to large expedition-style trucks.
Its first offering is this F550-based monster that features a boX Manufacturing motorhome box with a Tourig full powder-coated aluminum interior. It has 95 gallons of water on board, hydronic underfloor heating, 800 amp-hours of batteries and much more.
The entire vehicle is just 27 feet long – so it’s eligible to legally enter all national parks – and the RV floor is 12 feet long. This complete mobile adventure will cost you between $500,000 and $600,000, depending on how you equip it.
Pure 4×4 GX460
This 2021 Lexus GX460 The premium construction in the Toyo Tires stand turned heads! Not just because of the graphics either. This build has every part you can think of and runs at 35 seconds – a great project to do on this platform.
You can read more about this platform and its owner, @pure_jmatton Instagram.
Equipped Sleepy 2.0
I personally spent time in the first iteration of this Crew-built a 2004 Toyota Tundra Access Cab SR5 4.7L Supercharged V8 Truck, nicknamed “Sleepy”.
Although it may look gray and basic, this truck packs a punch with plenty of power and all kinds of premium components. It is also in very good condition for an 18 year old truck with high mileage.
The truck recently got a facelift with an all-new OME suspension, rear seat delete, EzAwn 270 canopy and Cube privacy room, AT Overland Atlas mattress topper, and unique bed construction.
Instead of traditional cabinets or drawers, the truck bed was built with a Goose Gear plate, fridge slide and AluBoxes. The AluBoxes are the storage and cabinet system. Not only are they a cheaper option – $3,500 vs. $10,000+ for a full cabinet system – they also allow for easy change of equipment and quick reconfiguration to use the truck bed for anything. what you plan to do.
Out of routine Xterra
The Xterra isn’t getting enough love and is sure to return to Nissan’s lineup soon. It’s Jonathan’s… @outofroutineproductions — 2001 example that he lives full time.
It features a 2-inch lift, quality AT tires, a custom interior slider system, a hard-shell Mt Hood RTT CVT, a Dometic CFX3 55IMand a ton of little details for a quality life on the road.
RRE Global G-Wagon
Mercedes G-Wagon prices have gone crazy lately, as it’s almost impossible to buy a new one with a V8 these days. This particular G-Wagon comes fully equipped with LeTech portal axles and other components, an all-in-one QuQuQ interior motorhome system, and more. It’s a show truck for EPP Globalwhich imports all upgrade parts.
To me, this vehicle just screams adventure. Sure, you’ll find more in Beverly Hills than in the remote mountains, but this one is designed to get off the beaten path.
The new tundra is an impressive truck that is already all over the land industry landscape. This build has all the latest bumpers, roof racks, rock sliders, bed racks, and more from CBI Off-Road and Prinsu Design.
It looks ready for a real overland adventure or a family off-road/camping adventure for us!
Restored K4 Blazer
We know little about this old soft-top Chevy Blazer other than that it’s been fully refreshed and looks amazing with the shiny Grumman canoe on top. Throw a ground tent in the back, grab some basic camping gear and go on an adventure.
