SPORT in the depths of winter is not always an attractive sight and so it was in Moycullen on Saturday afternoon that wind and rain reduced this West Board U19 football final to a test of endurance. Salthill/Knocknacarra have done enough to cross the line and in doing so are the first winners of the David Cox Memorial Cup.

Favored by the elements in the first half, they laid the groundwork for their win with some smashing points from Ryan Kavanagh and Matthew Thompson and while a four-point interval lead wasn’t exactly dominant, the defense of Salthill played their part on the restart as they kept Oranmore/Maree just one point clear and three on aggregate in a frustrating chase to close the gap.

Although the City team always seemed to have the advantage, Oranmore/Maree can point to many factors that could have tipped the game in their direction. They got the boost of an early goal but rarely appeared to score for the rest of the half. They had plenty of possession on the restart, but no one taking responsibility for the occasional shot, they just handballed the ball all over the park and had little to no penetration.

Four free kicks missed in succession by four different players only added to Oranmore/Maree’s frustration and as the chase went straight to the point they also had a late scoring chance which was dismissed.
