Registration is now open for the 2022 BC Canoe Festival, taking place April 29-May 1 in Hope.

Paddlers will traverse the waters of Kawkawa Lake and participate in a long list of canoe-related activities.

The festival includes paddling clinics, slideshows, nature paddles and backcountry camping seminars. The flagship event is a regatta open to all categories of paddlers, from tandem and solo to marathon, voyageur and family.

According to the event websitethe 2022 BC Canoe Festival is held at Camp Kawkawa and includes food and accommodation, with options to camp or stay in a cabin.

“We’re really excited to be back at Camp Kawkawa,” said Keiran Rankin, president of the Recreation Canoeing Association of British Columbia (RCABC). “We had to cancel the last two years due to limits on large gatherings for COVID. Our individual clubs have been out on the water together, but it’s been a long time since we’ve been able to come together as a provincial organization and I can tell you we’re all sick of Zoom meetings!

“This festival is our signature event and we will have fun with our paddling clinics, games, presentations and sitting together to share food and stories again.”

Festival sessions will include:

– On-water sessions, from basic paddling and rescues to refreshments and more

– Presentations on canoe trips, environmental issues, etc.

– Workshops on topics such as paddling equipment, food, canoe songs, trip planning, yoga for paddlers

– Guided nature walks and paddles around Kawkawa Lake

– Social activities including square dancing, storytelling and games

– RCABC Annual General Meeting and Instructors Annual General Meeting.

Only RCABC members can participate in this last element. Membership costs $15 per year.

Registration for the festival opened on March 7. Preferred rates end March 21 and registration ends April 10.

Organizers are also looking for people to facilitate sessions and travel grants are offered for volunteers willing to lead or attend at least two sessions.

Organizers are also looking for people to help collect donations from various retailers, which are used as door prizes and to recognize festival volunteers and RCABC contributors.
