Bedfordview paddler excels at VLC – Germiston City News

Bedfordview resident and paddler Robert Hamer took to the water when he competed in a variety of races that prepare paddlers for Gauteng Canoe Union team selection.

On May 29, Hamer and Ryno Armdorff competed in a marathon race and final team selection race held at the Victoria Lake Canoe Club.

The duo completed it in 2:11 hours and were the fourth veteran-aged paddlers to cross the finish line.

Hamer, who took advantage of the opportunity to race, passed Armdorff after his partner, from previous races, was unable to join him for the final selection race.

Jennie Dallas, public relations liaison for the Gauteng Canoe Union, said many paddlers enjoyed the opportunity to get in shape and compete in the various marathon distance races.

Wayne Saunders and Bedfordview resident Robert Hamer during the marathon race held at the Florida Lake Canoe Club on May 15. Saunders and Hamer can be seen closest to shore when arriving at the portage.

She said that the 20 km races included a portage.

Portages require paddlers to get their boats out of the water and run a short distance carrying them before getting back in the water and continuing to paddle.

The Gauteng Canoe Union team will represent the union and the province when they compete in the SA Marathon Championships at KZN in June.
