The International Olympic Committee has approved the initial sports program for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles with 28 sports on the program, including skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing. The 28 sports included in the initial sports program are athletics, rowing, badminton, basketball, canoeing, cycling, horse riding, fencing, football, golf, gymnastics, handball , hockey, judo, wrestling, swimming, rugby, taekwondo. tennis. table tennis, shooting, archery, triathlon, sailing, volleyball, surfing, skating and sport climbing, the IOC said in a statement on Thursday.

In the meantime, the IOC Session also took note of additional proposals from the IOC Executive Board (EB), recommended by the Olympic Program Commission (OPC), which considered sport-specific issues, as well as the impact on the overall cost and complexity of the Games.
The IOC Session recognized that the proposal on pathways for boxing, weightlifting and modern pentathlon was potential in the initial LA28 sports program at the IOC Session in 2023.
These three sports may be included in the initial Los Angeles sports program by the IOC Session in 2023 if by then the respective IFs have demonstrated to the satisfaction of the IOC that they have addressed the areas specified by the EB on 9 December 2021, the release says.
The LA28 Organizing Committee may offer additional sports in 2023 and it has also approved a process for finalizing disciplines in each sport to provide early certainty for athletes, National Olympic Committees (NOCs), International Federations (FI) and the organization. The IOC and the LA28 Organizing Committee renewed their joint commitment to prioritize reducing the cost and complexity of hosting the Games, including a review of each sport’s disciplines, which will be finalized before the IOC session in 2023, in consultation with the LA28 and the IF, the statement said.
The statement said the IOC will continue to monitor the development of the international match schedule before taking a final decision on the inclusion of football in the 2028 programme.
