Bude’s adventurer walks for the RNLI

OWEN Morice is no stranger to adventure and this month he will be undertaking a fundraising hike for the RNLI.

Owen is originally from Launceston but has spent much of his time in Bude, Summerleaze and Widemouth in particular, riding the waves. After spending time in the military, he returned home and found pleasure in weekend backpacking trips and decided he wanted to combine these passions for an exciting new fundraiser.

Owen will hike the Cornish section of the South West Coastal Path covering 288 miles/460 km. He plans to visit all RNLI stations along the way, starting with his local station in Bude.

Owen told the Post: “I grew up in Launceston and lived on and off in Bude. So growing up in Launceston my friends and I all bodyboarded in Summerleaze and Widemouth. I spent four years in the Air Force and when I left I ended up in Exeter and always came back to Bude whenever I could to take a member of the Exeter Canoe Club surf kayak like the one of their volunteer coaches.

Knowing that the RNLI was just a phone call away was a great comfort to him and his friends as they navigated often treacherous waters, and he was keen to do his part to give something back.

“Over the past few years I have moved into surfing and had a few occasions where people had issues in the water and it has always been extremely reassuring that the RNLI is only a phone call away whether a local surfer or visitors to Cornwall who are less familiar with the sea conditions find themselves in trouble, and even with experience it can happen to anyone.

“I plan to do a charity walk along the Cornish section of the South West Coastal Path next month, starting in Bude and ending in Plymouth and covering 288 miles / 460km. I will be fundraising for the RNLI so I will depart from their station in Bude and visit the other 12 stations we have along the Cornish coast on my itinerary.

“When I left the military, I still really loved backpacking weekends and this trip seems like a really cool way to combine two of my passions for a good cause.”
