Danish jet-set paddler Susan Lützner will tick another South African canoe race off her bucket list when she competes in the Fish River Canoe Marathon on October 7-8 in a K3 with partner Dusi Loveday Zondi and Rod Penaluna.

The Fish River Canoe Marathon will start near Hofmeyr on the Grassridge Dam and finish at Cradock.

Lützner started paddling late in life and her newfound passion saw her recently complete the Sella downhill in Spain before returning home to contest the European Marathon Championships.

It was while participating in the Berg River Canoe Marathon that she befriended Gauteng paddler Loveday Zondi, a mutual admiration that led them to complete the three-day MyLife Dusi Canoe Marathon together.

Lützner quickly realized that the Fish Marathon was held in very high regard in South African paddling circles and added it to the list of iconic global paddling events she wanted to attend.

“I’ve never paddled a K3 before, so I’m very excited,” Lützner said.

“I know I will be in very good hands.”

Penaluna is a veteran of 23 fish marathons and will anchor the K3 journey on the 82 kilometers of irrigation water that make up the fish marathon.

Lützner will meet Zondi at Ponte de Lima in Portugal where they will compete in the Masters Cup marathon races together, and will also compete in the Liffey Descent in Ireland alongside a number of familiar South African expats like Swede Mark Ussher .

The Fish Marathon attracts the world’s largest gathering of unique three-seater boats from South Africa each year and is a popular and social way for experienced paddlers to introduce newcomers to the Fish Marathon.
