From today until April 24, the Gold Coast will host the 2022 Paddle Australia Canoe Marathon Championships, organized in conjunction with Paddle Queensland and with the support of Major Events Gold Coast.
Here are the top five things you need to know before the action begins.
- Where will the event take place?
The 2022 Canoe Marathon Championships will be held on Lake Coomera, a non-tidal body of water with minimal current, over distances ranging from 3.7km (for the youngest paddlers) to 29.6km for the longest event.
The standard course events consist of one or more laps of the 3.7km loop, but short events will also be contested on a reduced course measuring 1.1km and repeated three times.
- Who participates ?
Canoe marathon athletes of all ages will travel to the Sunshine State from across the country to finally return to national competition after a three-year hiatus. Titles will be awarded in the Juniors (under 10 to under 18), Open, Masters and Masters 60+ categories.
- When were the last national canoe-marathon championships held?
The final national level Canoe Marathon event was held in Perth, WA from May 17-19, 2019. Organized by Ascot Kayak Club and Paddle WA, the event brought together nearly 300 participants from across Australia and the New Zealand to compete on the Swan River. .
- When does the event start and can I follow?
The event kicks off on Friday with the short course events starting at 9 a.m. (local time).
The standard course singles events are scheduled on Saturday and the doubles on Sunday.

Yes! The championships are also a selection event for Australia’s 2022 Marathon and Marathon Masters teams, who will compete overseas in late September at the ICF Canoe Marathon World Championships in Ponte de Lima, Portugal.
