In a perfect lead to next weekend’s Dusi Canoe Marathon, Salt Rock’s Hank McGregor won another surfski gold.
The third event in Friday night’s popular Chalupsky Properties surfski series proved to be a happy hunting ground for McGregor as he beat previous winners Matthew Bouman and Gene Prato for the top spot.
Although Durbanites are already preparing for bad weather to arrive in the week ahead, there was only a slight southwesterly and small waves for paddlers to contend with.
It allowed pedigree and experience to come to the fore and McGregor did just that, racing with a cool head against the younger competitors. McGregor, Bouman and Prato all turned together after the first round and it was initially a tug of war between the 3.
“On the second lap, I managed to get a hundred yard lead over them and managed to hook over the head that leg back into the wind,” McGregor said.
“It was great to be back on the starting line after a little break from surfskiing with all the river racing leading up to Dusi,” he said. Surfski racing is McGregor’s specialty and he has won 11 world championship gold medals in the marathon discipline.
“It will be exciting to see how the series unfolds after three races with three different winners.”
The next event in the Marine Series will take place on Friday, February 11 before taking a week-long break for the Dusi. On the women’s side, Hayley Nixon held off her sisters Saskia and Valmajean Hockly for the win, while Jason Ekstrand and Richard Lowe picked up the win in doubles.
