Hartley’s 2022 season was on hold after the conclusion of the Fish River Canoe Marathon, but an approach from the current mixed doubles record holder twisted her arm and the suit has been shaping up ever since.

“Pippa approached me and I wasn’t sure Dusi would be part of my plan, but I thought it was a great opportunity to come back to Dusi” says Bridgitte Hartley.

“We rowed the Umpetha Challenge together and I felt we were really strong in the boat together and other than a shock at Taxi Rapid we had a good race.

“Our race was solid although it’s always difficult, especially this first carry of the season, but we are convinced that we can give the Dusi a good blow next year.”

McGregor has always paddled well lately as evidenced by her third at the Fish with Jordan Peek and for Hartley it’s exciting to see her work hard.

“She paddled really well and had good motivation from (her husband) Hank (McGregor) which is fantastic,” Hartley said. We’re both at KZN, which makes training together a bit easier.

“Pippa is heading for the Cape Point Challenge so she will have a lot of mileage when we start the Dusi.

“I’m looking forward to participating in some of the pre-Dusi races as well as the Ozzie Gladwin Lighthouse Designs, which are the SA K2 River Championships, as we will get a good idea of where the other female crews are ahead of Dusi.

“We’ll have to go on the river and do a lot of guts because I’ve learned this year that the more time you spend on the river, the more time you have to correct mistakes and learn the best lines,” Hartley added.

Bridgitte Hartley wants them to compete in their own Dusi Canoe Marathon

The women’s race is shaping up to be one of the most exciting in years with the rumor mill working overtime. However, for Hartley, she wants them to participate in their own race over the course of the three days.

“I just hope I can give Pippa the same confidence Hank has because if I can, I think I’ll be fine.

“She’s a Dusi record holder so I really hope she won’t forget this form!”

“We are both looking forward to the race and are delighted to give it a good shot. “
