Vermont is a beautiful New England state that everyone should make time to visit. Go to northern Canada and discover the largest skating rink in the world – the Rideau Canal Skateway in the capital of CanadaOttawa.

Winter is coming, and soon it will be time to ice skating on some of the world’s frozen lakes. Make the most of the coming winter and have a fun day outdoors. Find out why Vermont is such a beautiful destination in all seasons of the year – spring, summer, fall and winter.

Lake Morey – A Historic, Year-Round Destination

The village claiming the longest skate track in the world is Fairlee, with a population of less than a thousand. Originally, Lake Morey was called Fairlee Pond and was renamed in 1795 after Samuel Morey. Samuel Morey is famous for obtaining a patent for the first paddle wheel steamer which he built in his workshop near the lake.

Go in the summer and you’ll find Lake Morey dotted with boats and water sports. In the fall, the brilliant fall foliage is on full display, with the forested hills around the lake turning into a mosaic of yellow, orange and red. In winter, the lake freezes over and Lake Morey develops the longest outdoor skating rink in the United States.

Outside of winter, borrow a resort road bike and cycle around the lake and find the hidden chalets dotted around the hillsides. In the summer, jump into the lake for a swim or a paddleboard. Rent a kayak or canoe at the resort’s boathouse along the lake. Licensed drivers can also rent a speedboat and enjoy a day of waterskiing or wakeboarding.

Lake Morey Resort and the longest skating rink in the United States

Central Vermont and the area around Fairlee have been recreational destinations since the 1880s when the first summer cabins were built. A small hotel there, called Lake Morey Resortwas built in 1905 and expanded over the decades.

  • Costs: Free to use
  • Season: January to March (weather and ice permitting)
  • The longest : USA ice skating trail
  • Starting point : Lake Morey Resort and Fairlee Town Beach

The ice usually freezes quite hard in mid-January and the steep hills around the lake tend to block harsh winter winds. When the ice lends itself to it, the station takes out a tractor to clear the snow and the 7 km long skating track is recreated. The trail is maintained by Lake Morey Resort in partnership with the Upper Valley Trails Alliance. There are also a dozen small ice rinks inside the lake.

Visitors should not expect a smooth skate. Put on a pair of Nordic skates – they’re designed for wild, ungroomed ice. The Lake Morey Skate Trail hugs the shores of the lake, offering breathtaking views and the odd bald eagle.

After getting your fill of ice skating, enjoy Lake Morey’s other winter activities. Other winter activities include pond hockey tournaments and ice fishing.

Before you get too excited and head out to the Lake Morey Skate Trail, check out the Daily Ice Report on the Lake Morey Resort Facebook page. The skating rink is free – although they do accept donations.

Lake Morey Resort offers ice skate rentals in the Morey Room, just off the resort’s main lobby. Rentals are available Monday through Friday from 11:00 a.m. and weekends from 10:00 a.m. (although resort guests have access to rentals from 9:00 a.m. every day of the week). All rentals must be returned by 4:45 p.m. Rentals are also free for resort guests.

  • Days of the week: From 11:00 a.m.
  • Weekends: From 10:00 a.m.
  • Return: Around 4:45 p.m.

The station mainly rents Nordic skates. Nordic skates have longer blades that are flat instead of concave so they don’t cut into the ice as much. They are best suited for long distances on a rough outdoor ice trail. Hockey skates and figure skates, on the other hand, are better for grip when stopping and turning.

Alternatively, skating equipment can be rented from Nordic Skater in Norwich, VT. Visitors can also bring their own equipment and skate for free.
