Leylah Fernandez falls to Belinda Bencic in Guadalajara

Belinda Bencic wasted five match points in a second-set tiebreaker but rallied to beat Canadian Leylah Fernandez in three sets on Monday in the first round of the Akron Open in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Bencic, a 10th-ranked Swiss player, prevailed 7-5, 6-7 (10), 6-3 against Fernandez, who reached the final of the 2021 US Open.

Fernandez fended off all five of Bencic’s chances to close the game, claiming the tiebreaker mid-set on his second set point. The players traded breaks of serve early in the third set before Bencic broke again for a 4-2 lead and eventually held on for the win.

Bencic finished with significant edges in aces (7-2) and double faults (13-8).

Colombia’s Camila Osorio beat 15th-seeded Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-4, 7-6(8) but 16th-seeded Czech Petra Kvitova won her opener 6-3, 7 -5 against American Bernarda Pera.

Other first-round winners were Belarusian Victoria Azarenka, Russian Liudmila Samsonova, Chinese Lin Zhu, Canadians Rebecca Marino and Bianca Andreescu, Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk, Belgian Elise Mertens and American Sloane Stephens.

In the final match of the evening, Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic defeated Mexican entrant Fernanda Contreras Gomez 6-2, 6-1.
