The United States reduced China’s lead in the medal table, leaving them just two ahead at the end of the penultimate day of the Tokyo Olympics.

China entered Saturday with a lead of five gold medals, but a double success in the 4x400m relay allowed the United States to catch up.

Allyson Felix became the only American athlete to win 11 medals on the track as the women took gold in the relay, while the men scored an 18th success finishing well ahead, with the Netherlands far behind.

Team USA won its fourth consecutive gold medal in the men’s basketball final, and Nelly Korda achieved success in women’s golf.

China clinched two golds to take their tally to 38, with Cao Yuan becoming the first athlete to win three different Olympic diving events, and Yang Jian securing a Chinese double in the 10m platform . Their other victory came in the women’s 500m canoe double sprint.

Early leaders Japan claimed a trio of triumphs, the first of which came in softball, while the Russian Olympic Committee also won three gold medals with Abdulrashid Sadulaev dominating men’s heavyweight freestyle wrestling.

Galal Yafai won Britain’s 19th gold medal with a 4-1 points decision in the men’s flyweight boxing final before Joe Choong added another by replicating Kate French’s feat in the men’s version of the modern pentathlon.

Australia, who equaled their Games medal record on Thursday, remain in sixth place, with Nicola McDermott’s silver making women’s high jump history with her country’s first medal in the event since 1964.
