OLEAN — According to the Collins dictionary, “endurance racing” is a foot race where the competitors’ endurance is tested to the limit. Well, the Grand Olean Area Chamber of Commerce’s Mayhem Events Committee is testing the riders’ endurance next month.

The Magnificent May Mayhem is scheduled for May 20-21 – the Hike To Herman endurance race is on Saturday. The official distance is 3 miles with an elevation of 392 feet and the route is set for South Barry Street to Franchot Boulevard, South Union Street to the town of Olean Road to the Reservoir (near South Union Street Branch), up and around an access road, back down the same road to Four Mile, then under the East State Street Bridge via Adams Street to War Veterans Park.

“It was another event that was researched six years ago, but the events committee opted for StrOlean,” said Meme Yanetsko, COO of GOACC. “It was a no-brainer when we wanted to add the chariot and the regatta to this crazy event – so Hike to Herman was developed.

Endurance race fees will include the event tech t-shirt, refreshments at the end, and other race paraphernalia. The fee is currently $50, with an increase to $60 from May 16 through the day of the event.

“Hard trails are nothing new to the racing world – there are mud trails, Iron Man challenges and the like – the hike to Herman features a change in elevation from the flat road surface onto a dirt track. land at 392 feet when you come to the next bend – all within a 0.5 mile radius,” added Erica Dreher, GOACC Member Services Manager and avid runner.

Start – Four Mile Brewing Co.

End – Veterans Park

Conditions – asphalt, black roof, dirt roads

GOACC unveiled this new event in September, called Magnificent May Mayhem, or M3. A mayhem is described/defined as mayhem, pandemonium, and heckling.

“Although most definitions are not a good thing, we use the term chaos to describe the many activities and programs that come together for this event,” Yanetsko said.

Entries for the Float the Allegheny and the River Regatta all have entry deadlines – May 9th. You can register after this date, but the price increases by $10 and the Chamber cannot guarantee your tank size. Similar to the Chamber Challenge event, there are deadlines for ordering/printing shirts.

“We urge people to register early,” Yanetsko said.

The river regatta will feature one-person, two-person, four-person and six-person floating craft, whether kayak, canoe or flat-bottomed boat. Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place for each class of ship as this is a timed event.

Also tentatively scheduled for M3 that Friday are street dancing, food trucks and carnival games. Saturdays include community-wide yard sales, the Soundstage, the River Regatta, the Allegheny Float, Mount Herman Hike, and the city’s largest flea market.

Please note that early versions indicated that a walk in wine and a putt putt crawl would also be part of M3, but GOACC schedules them for a StrOlean date (yet to be scheduled). Information about the M3 is available online at shop.oleanny.com, call 372-4433 or email [email protected]
