McGregor to paddle with Hartley

South African canoe star Bridgitte Hartley (right) will team up with Pippa McGregor for the 2022 MyLife Dusi Canoe Marathon.

Just over two months before the MyLife Dusi Canoe Marathon 2022, Bridgitte Hartley has enlisted the services of Pippa McGregor for the 71st edition of the famous race from February 17 to 19.

“Pippa approached me and I wasn’t sure Dusi would be part of my plan, but I thought it was a great opportunity to come back to Dusi,” Hartley said.

“We rowed the Umpetha Challenge together and I felt we were really strong in the boat together and other than a shock at Taxi Rapid we had a good race.

“Our race was solid although it’s always difficult, especially this first carry of the season, but we are convinced that we can give the Dusi a good blow next year.”

McGregor has always paddled well recently, as evidenced by his third at the Fish with Jordan Peek. “We’re both in KZN, which makes training together a bit easier.

Pippa is heading for the Cape Point Challenge so she will have a lot of mileage when we start the Dusi.

“I’m looking forward to participating in some of the pre-Dusi races as well as the Ozzie Gladwin Lighthouse Designs, which are the SA K2 River Championships, as we will get a good idea of where the other female crews are ahead of Dusi.”

The women’s race is shaping up to be one of the most exciting in years with the rumor mill working overtime; however, for Hartley, she wants them to participate in their own race over the course of the three days.

“I just hope I can give Pippa the same confidence as [husband] Hank does, because if I can then I think I’ll be fine.

“She’s a Dusi record holder so I really hope she doesn’t forget this form!” Hartley said.

“We are both looking forward to the race and are delighted to give it a good shot. “
