National canoe event in Worcester this weekend


The Worcester Canoe Club will host a national canoeing event over the coming weekend (August 27-28).

The 2022 British National Open Marathon Racing Individual and Team Championships will be held on Worcester’s River Severn, with the base of the championships being the Worcester Canoe Club on Grandstand Road.

A spokesperson for the event said: “The Canoe Marathon is a very spectator friendly sport and it will be completely free for the public to come and watch if they wish over the weekend.

“The national championships are also used as one of the evaluation events for the world championships team that will travel to Portugal in September, so it is likely that there will be athletes competing who could win a medal. at the world championships later this year.

“Canoeing enjoyed brilliant coverage for our paracanoe and sprint athletes as they competed in the European Multisport Championships in Munich.

“British Canoeing came away with 9 medals in the paracanoe races and six A-finals for our canoe sprint athletes.

“Although the canoe marathon is not a discipline that was part of the European Championships in Munich, some of the athletes who were competing last weekend will also participate in these national championships.

“Additionally, we had our most successful European Championships to date at the end of July with the British team walking away with seven medals.”

The organizers recommend that anyone wishing to visit Pitchcroft Parks and it is possible to camp at Worcester Racecourse.
