AD leader says eThekwini cannot be allowed to continue its current downward spiral
Neighborhood by Neighborhood, We’ll Free eThekwini from the ANC’s Failure
October 28, 2022
I will spend today campaigning in Ward 10 of eThekwini ahead of next week’s crucial by-election, as well as conducting a monitoring tour of the failing water and sewer infrastructure of the Metro. This great city cannot be allowed to continue its current downward spiral, and by-elections like these are important stepping stones to wrest control from the ANC government that has wrought this governance disaster.
Later in the day we will visit the Umbilo sewage treatment plant, where raw sewage flowed into the river and discharged into the port. This monitoring visit will form part of our fact-finding mission before announcing our legal action against eThekwini Metro Council for its failure to maintain this critical infrastructure and protect the city’s residents from dangerous pollution.
The challenges facing the residents of Ward 10 are the same as the challenges facing the entire Metro: the steady collapse of service delivery and a shocking neglect of infrastructure by an ANC-led local government that is all just out of reach. These challenges existed long before the devastating April floods wreaked havoc across eThekwini, but the floods not only made the situation much worse, they also gave the ANC government a convenient excuse to hide behind. Every failure and every dereliction of duty is now pinned on the floods.
