Paddlers Win Championships | Sandton Chronicle

Local paddlers from Sandton and surrounding areas have recently excelled at the South African Marathon Championships.

The championship, held in KwaZulu-Natal, saw the country’s top paddlers compete for national honours.

St David’s Marist Inanda learner Theo Dreyer won the U16 category in a time of 01:50:00. Theo then teamed up with KZN’s Lungelo Gumede for the Junior U18 K2 race (two-man kayak event), where the pair finished in sixth place.

“The races included a number of short portage sections where the paddlers race with the boat,” said Jennie Dallas of the Gauteng Canoe Union.

Nicholas Erwee, Luke Salmon and Matthew Charter are other learners from St David’s Marist Inanda who have been selected to represent Team Gauteng.

Nicholas finished in eighth place while Luke finished in fifth place in the U18 category. Matthew finished in fourth place in the U14 category.

“A successful event indeed for future Gauteng Canoe Marathon Champions,” Dallas said.
