Salt Rock’s Pippa McGregor picked up a silver medal in her first outing at the ICF Canoe Marathon World Championships in Portugal.
Held in Ponte de Lima this year, the championships are the pinnacle of canoeing in the world and attract the best athletes from all categories.
Needing to bring him an A game for a medal, McGregor raced in the K1 age group event 35-39 on Monday.
Competitors completed four laps and three portages on their way to the finish line, testing their all-around paddling ability.
McGregor fought bravely throughout, pushing eventual winner Maria Collueque of Argentina to the finish, eventually finishing just over 30 seconds behind.
Her time of 1:24.05 comfortably earned her the silver medal, and she was more than nine minutes ahead of third-placed Natalia Lallana, also from Argentina.
McGregor’s week is far from over and she was scheduled to compete in the Mixed 35-49 K2 event with husband Hank on Tuesday afternoon.
This will be followed by the K2 Women’s Open event, where she will partner Jenna Nisbet on Sunday.
The mixed event is Hank’s first of the week and he hopes to add some early silverware to his already jam-packed cabinet.
He will be back in action for the Men’s K1 Open Short Race on Thursday this week, where he will need to qualify in Round 1 to qualify for the final on the same day.
The weekend will be capped off with his K2 open event on Sunday with partner Jasper Mocke.
