Portland paddle retirees complete 400-mile charity kayak

A power duo from PORTLAND completed their 400-mile kayaking challenge to benefit Julia’s House.

Endurance athletes Tim Ellis, 66, and Eddie Ette, 65, ended up kayaking 423 miles from Land’s End to Margate in just 13 days to raise money for the children’s charity based in the Dorset.

The challenge itself had to be split into two parts, due to pre-arranged family vacations, but Tim and Eddie took over and completed the final two stages earlier this month.

In total, the pair spent 95 hours paddling in all sorts of conditions and Tim said this would likely be their last “gigantic challenge”.

He said: “Well the idea started last year as ‘a quiet paddle down the south coast’ but over the years we’ve done quite a few big fundraisers and raised money for the British Heart Foundations, Parkinsons, a few cancer organizations so we thought why not link it to charity again.

“We chose Julia’s House because we both lost family members to cancer and I always remember my mother’s death, it was close to one of our previous events, she said ‘do it for the kids’ which is why we chose Julia’s House and I trained for about six months.

Over the 13 days of the challenge – averaging 32.5 miles / just over 7 hours of paddling each day – there were a number of occasions when Tim and Eddie found themselves “in the hands of the gods of the weather,” but Tim said nothing matched the feeling of taking on the challenge.

He said: “With all this ultra-distance racing, it’s nice to look back at what you’ve done and say ‘yes, it wasn’t easy’ but that’s what makes it so magnificent. Riding around the White Cliffs of Dover and riding with the waves, when the conditions are perfect, that’s what makes up for the tough times. And, of course, we know we’re lucky: most people don’t can’t do this at 65, so we appreciate that we’re in a lucky position and able to raise money for a fantastic charity at the same time.
