Teens can win a free trip to Boundary Waters, no parents allowed – Reuters

Ely Outfitting Company is again offering an essay contest giving teens a chance to win a free, all-expenses-paid outfitted trip to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, and parents are not allowed to come.

The essay contest is open to all high school students, juniors and seniors. They must write between 1,000 and 1,500 words on “Why do you want to have a BWCAW canoe-camping adventure without parents with your friends?” »

The deadline to participate is February 13.

The winner receives a fully equipped, self-guided, five-day canoe-camping adventure in the BWCAW with up to three of their friends. The winning outfitting package includes premium gear like ultralight Kevlar canoes, backcountry tents, specialized trail meals, maps and an emergency communication device.

In addition to a grand prize winner, Ely Outfitting Co. is randomly giving away various prizes like water bottles, stickers, shirts and hats throughout the contest period. Everyone who registers will also receive a coupon worth $50 off a full outfitting package, partial outfitting package or canoe and camping gear rental during the 2022 season.

Jason Zabokrtsky, owner of Ely Outfitting Co., said a self-guided trip without adults helps teens build character, confidence and outdoor skills.

“We want to provide teens with the opportunity to safely explore wild places, challenge themselves and develop wilderness skills,” he said.

The contest’s first winner, Julia Ruelle, of Minnetonka, Minnesota, spoke about the value of learning skills in the wilderness, escaping technology and relying on group independence.
