The SCRCA is hosting the Sydenham River Canoe and Kayak Race on Sunday


The St. Clair Region Conservation Authority (SCRCA) and the St. Clair Region Conservation Foundation (SCRCF) have announced that they will be hosting the Sydenham River Canoe and Kayak Race on Sunday May 1, 2022.

The event aims to raise funds to support conservation education programs in the St. Clair area watershed in addition to showcasing the unique natural features and recreational opportunities offered by the Sydenham River.

Recognized by the Ontario Marathon Canoe Kayak Racing Association, SCRCA officials say the race features eleven classes and three different race lengths to appeal to competitive and recreational paddlers.

Seven-kilometre racing classes include Recreation, Lazy River, VIP, Touring (over 50), and Kayak.

Twelve kilometer race categories include Rec Tandem Men, Rec Tandem Mixed and Amateur Kayak.

The 16 kilometer racing classes are Pro C2 Men, Pro C2 Mixte and Expert Kayak.

Entrants are encouraged to seek sponsorship for their efforts which will be used to support conservation education programs provided by the SCRCA.

Trophies will be awarded to the winners of each race and to the top fundraiser.

Registration will remain open until 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 28.

The cost to participate is $10 (plus online processing fee of $1.90).

The start line is located at Mosside Road, just west of Country Road 79.

A shuttle service will be available from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. between departure and arrival.

All classes and race lengths end at the Shetland Conservation Area located on Lambton County Road 2.

Participants are required to provide their own canoe or kayak equipped with a whistle, bailer and 50 feet of rope.

Personal flotation devices (PFDs) or approved life jackets must be worn by each paddler.
